ABOUT KHAIRIL M BAHAR
Born in the Philippines and brought up in England, Khairil has been in love with the movies since he first saw ‘Back to the Future’ and discovered filmmaking during the mid-90’s through the numerous indie low-budget filmmakers of the time such as Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino.
After his first two short films, ‘Nicotine’ and ‘Some Like It White’, Khairil made his name in the film industry with his debut feature film ‘Ciplak’ which was shot on a shoestring budget of RM10,000 (RM8,500 of which was spent on the camera), shot during the weekends whilst still working in an advertising agency as a copywriter. The film was distributed by Golden Screen Cinemas in the GSC International Screens in Kuala Lumpur and Penang, receiving rave reviews and won the Anugerah Skrin 2006 for ‘Best Alternative Film’.
Khairil was also a part of the 15Malaysia project in which he wrote and directed the short film ‘Healthy Paranoia’, featuring Baki Zainal and health minister Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai and rin 2012 released his second feature length film to hit the big screens, ‘Relationship Status’, which featured an all star cast including Gavin Yap, Davina Goh, Tony Eusoff, Daphne Iking, Baki Zainal, Susan Lankester and much more. The film received positive reviews across the board and was independently released by Khairil and his producer Bahir Yeusuff together with TGV cinemas.
Known for taking on multiple roles behind the camera, Khairil not only writes and directs but also edits and works behind the camera as director of photography (DOP), most recently as the DOP and editor for Gavin Yap’s debut feature film as writer/director, ‘Take Me To Dinner’.
Apart from filmmaking, Khairil has also been involved in theatre, appearing on stage in productions such as ‘Lost and Found’, directed by Joe Hasham and Gavin Yap, as well as writing music for theatre productions such as ‘Life Sdn Bhd 6: Abuse’ and most recently ‘Malaysian Girls’, also directed by Joe Hasham, earlier this year.
He also records a podcast for the website ‘Geeks In Malaysia’ with co-hosts Amelia Chen and Nick Dorian, covering all things geeky from comics and movies to TV and games, and has played in a number of bands such as Khaimano, Y2k & Rollin’ Sixers.
Most recently he has wrapped on his first feature film for a major studio, ‘Showdown’, for Grand Brilliance (currently in post-production) and is one of the founders of the production company ‘Garang Pictures’ responsible for the production of the ‘Ikal Mayang’ short films anthology (of which Khairil was DP in early 2013) and ‘Cuak’, their first feature film which was released early 2014 to rave reviews.
